Fish River Canyon

Area Info

The Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in the Southern Hemisphere and second in size only to the Blue Nile Gorge in Ethiopia on the African continent. It is one of the main tourist attractions in the south of the country.

The Hobas Camping Site is situated 10km from the main viewpoint AND only 180km from Felix Unite Provenance base camp.

There is nowhere else in Africa a place like the Fish river canyon. Joining the Orange River at the mouth of the canyon, for thousands of years gouging out this gorge are enormous and dramatic. The canyon measures 160km in length, and up to 27 km in width. It is about 550m deep. The Fish River Canyon is in reality 2 canyons, one inside the other, which was formed in completely different ways. Nearly two billion years ago thoughts claimed that the original sedimentary layers of shale, sandstone and loose igneous material around the Canyon were later metamorphosed by heat and pressure into more solid materials.

In the inner canyon one are exposed to the cracks in the formation intrusions of igneous material, which formed dolerite dykes once they were cooled. The surface was then eroded into a basin and covered by a shallow sea, which eventually filled with sediment and later on washed down. Tectonic activity along crystal faults caused these layers to rift and tilt up to 45° angle around 500 million years ago. That’s when the canyon starts to form, due to these enormous forces causing a wide opening in the earth’s crust and also reflects to the outer canyon. The wide gap eventually became a watercourse, which began eroding a meandering path along the valley floor and gouged out to what now is the 270m deep canyon.

Aussenkehr

Area Info

Aussenkehr

Fruit production in Namibia has taken off in Southern Namibia at Aussenkehr on the Northern Banks of the Orange River which is primarily for the production of table grapes. Augmented by exceptionally long hours of sunshine, Namibia can produce grapes earlier in season than South Agrica, which gives significant price advantages in the EU.There are a total of 9 grape producing companies in the Aussenkehr Valley.Table grapes were planted at Aussenkehr, some 24 km downstream of Noordoewer, on an experimental basis in 1989. Since then, large tracts of the fertile alluvial plains have been planted under vineyards.

The grapes are harvested about three weeks earlier than those grown by other international producers and are, consequently, available in the European markets before Christmas. Other crops grown here include mangoes, citrus, lucerne and dates.

Oranjemund

Area Info

Oranjemund

In a nutshell, Oranjemund is about diamonds and people. Without the diamonds the people would not have been here. Oranjemund, meaning mouth of the Orange River is situated in the far south western corner of a vast country called Namibia.Oranjemund is bordered by the Orange river in the South, The Atlantic ocean on the West and to the North and East, the dry Namib desert.Another unique fact about Oranjemund is the fact that it is located in one of the richest diamond fields in the world and thus the area was proclaimed , Sperrgebiedt (forbidden territory), by the then German Colonial government of the day. To this extent most of the Sperrgebiedt has remained uninhabited.

It is not uncommon to see wild gemsboks and jackals wandering the streets of Oranjemund.

Rosh Pinah

Area Info

Rosh Pinah is a small Namibian mining town with a huge mining operation situated just a few kilometres north of the Orange River border with South Africa. There is not much to see here other than a few shops and a filling station. The mine here is the largest zinc mine in Africa, and also produces lead ore. The mine was opened in the year 2000 by the

Anglo American Corporation and is expected to produce more than 150000 tons of high-grade zinc ore per year for at least another fifteen years.

Just a few kilometres to the east of the town and easily reached by the road that follows the Orange River, is the Fish River Canyon. The Fish River flows into the Orange River in the Ai-Ais and Fish River Canyon Park. The canyon is 160 kilometres long and thirty wide, and the sidewalls are some 550 metres high. The canyon makes an awesome site and is bettered only by the Grand Canyon in the United States of America. There is a road that follows the eastern edge of the canyon for some 25kms that has a series of viewing sites that offer some splendid views of the canyon.

Richtersveld National Park

Area Info

Conjure up a desolate and forbidding landscape, seemingly devoid of life, except for some people dotting along the horizon. Make a startling discovery upon closer inspection when the mirage dissolves into the human-like half-mens (half person) and the harsh environment prove to be a treasure-chest containing the world’s richest desert flora. Miniature rock gardens, perfectly designed by nature, cling precariously to cliff faces. Tiny succulents, mere pinpoints against a backdrop of surreal rock formations, revel in the moisture brought by the early morning fog rolling in from the cold Atlantic Ocean.

Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep away inland from the Orange River divulge the fact that you are now in the vast mountain desert that is the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld National Park, an area managed jointly by the local Nama people and the South African National Parks. This is a harsh and unpredictable land where water is scarce and life-sustaining moisture comes in the form of early morning fog – called ‘Ihuries’ or ‘Malmokkies’ by the local people – which rolls in from the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, sustaining a remarkable range of small reptiles, birds and mammals. A staggering assortment of plant life, some species occurring nowhere else, is to be found here, with gnarled quiver trees, tall aloes and quaint ‘half-mens’ keeping vigil over this inscrutable landscape.

The park is only accessible by means of a 4×4 vehicle, but vehicles with high clearances such as combi’s and LDV’s do travel in the park. Sedan vehicles are not permitted. There is no specific route that can be booked in advance.
